During the nine months of pregnancy a women’s body goes through a period of rapid physiological and endocrinological changes. 50% of pregnant women complain of low back pain. This is partially due to ligament laxity and the pelvic joints which become capable of extensive movement. This causes the joints and muscles to be more susceptible to strain and injury. The spine must adapt to postural, hormonal and weight changes—all of which may contribute to the back pain some women experience.

Chiropractors are doctors with over seven years of education at the university level. They have studied the art and science of hands-on healing and therapy. A chiropractor is specially trained to locate and correct the problems that are causing your back pain related to pregnancy. As well, many women find that labour is shorter and more comfortable after having received chiropractic care during pregnancy. As your pregnancy advances your chiropractor will utilize special techniques and equipment that will make you comfortable no matter what your stage of pregnancy. You'll be relaxed and best of all, you'll say good bye to that aching back.

Chiropractic care is also important after the birth of your baby. The demands of caring for a newborn, from nursing, to sleepless nights and comforting and carrying your child can strain your neck, shoulders, and back. Chiropractic care can help new mothers to cope with these challenges and prevent future problems.

The stress of pregnancy can affect your entire body including your upper back. This can be compounded if you are continuing to work or caring for other children. The stress of ever day life from sitting at a computer to toting around young children can take its toll leaving your upper back achy and tired. Chiropractic treatment, soft tissue therapy and even pre-natal Pilates will help east the discomfort you are experiencing.

Sciatica: Chiropractic care is helpful for relieving pregnancy related sciatica pain. Some of the symptoms you may experience with sciatica are pins and needles in the lower back or leg. Shooting or burning pain in the leg, buttock or lower back. Lower back or back of the pelvis pain that may extend into the foot and foot or leg numbness.

Breech presentation: A breech presentation is when your baby is not in the head down position. Regular chiropractic care during your pregnancy can ensure that your pelvis is aligned and providing the space needed for your baby.

Chiropractic & Pregnancy

As a mother of two young children, I bring both personal and professional experience to provide women with chiropractic treatment during pregnancy. A complete consultation, history and diagnostic procedure will be completed to ensure the mother understands the goals of care. Upon examination of your spine and pelvis I determine if there are any problems in the joints that may be causing discomfort. Special pillows and table positions are used to position the mother comfortably. I use safe techniques that will make you comfortable during your treatment. Mothers typically experience an improvement in their pregnancy related discomfort and often report that labour is shorter and more comfortable after having received chiropractic care during pregnancy.

Chiropractic care is safe during all trimesters of pregnancy and can be started at any time of your pregnancy. It is an effective alternative which can alleviate many discomforts of pregnancy.
